Your BMI

What is BMI?

BMI – Body Mass Index – is a way to help you figure out if you are at a healthy weight for your height.

BMI is a number based on your weight and height. In general, the higher the number, the more body fat a person has. BMI is often used as a screening tool to decide if your weight might be putting you at risk for health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.

BMI is used to broadly define different weight groups in adults 20 years old or older. The same groups apply to both men and women.

How to calculate my BMI?

There are many BMI calculators online. However, for your convenience, I included one right here:

Simply enter your details/switch between the imperial and metric systems.

Once you enter your height and weight, your BMI number will be calculated.

ft
in
lbs
cm
kg

Compare your BMI number to this guide:

BMI is less than 18.5     Underweight

BMI is 18.5 to 24.9        Normal weight

BMI is 25 to 29.9          Overweight

BMI is 30 or more         Obese

The airlines are looking for candidates with the numbers in the ‘Normal Weight’ category.

Why is it important?

As I mentioned above, Your BMI is a ratio of your weight and height. It’s a good way to gauge whether your weight is in healthy proportion to your height. In fact, knowing your BMI can help you determine any health risks you may face if it’s outside of the healthy range.

Now from the airline’s point of view, it is exactly the same. The airlines need to know if you are generally healthy before you submit your online application and the BMI number is helping them to determine exactly that. Bear in mind that the recruitment process and initial cabin crew training provided by the airline cost lots of money therefore choosing the right and healthy candidate is the top priority for the recruitment team.

The cabin crew job is physically very demanding even though it doesn’t look like it when you are travelling as a passenger. Therefore keeping yourself in excellent shape should be one of your main concerns when applying for a cabin crew job. You don’t need to be an excellent athlete or a muscle man, just generally in very good health.

Let’s have a look at what the airlines included in the minimum requirements for the cabin crew job:

EMIRATES

  • Physically fit for this demanding role with a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI)

ETIHAD

  • Comfortable to work irregular hours and on a roster

QATAR

  • Excellent health and fitness
