A Step-by-Step Guide to the Cabin Crew Assessment Day Experience

Cabin Crew Assessment Day

An airline cabin crew assessment day is a recruitment process used by airlines to select the best candidates for cabin crew roles. It typically involves a series of assessments and tests designed to evaluate the candidates’ skills, knowledge, and abilities to work effectively as part of a team in a dynamic and challenging environment.

The assessment day usually begins with a presentation about the airline and the cabin crew role, followed by group activities and individual exercises. Candidates may be asked to participate in role-plays, group discussions, and problem-solving tasks. They may also be tested on their communication skills, customer service skills, and ability to handle emergency situations.

The airline cabin crew assessment day is a highly competitive process, and candidates are evaluated on various criteria such as their appearance, personality, language skills, and previous work experience. The assessment process may last several hours or even a whole day, and successful candidates may be invited for a final interview or further testing.

Overall, the airline cabin crew assessment day is an important step in the recruitment process for cabin crew roles and helps airlines select the most suitable candidates for these challenging and rewarding positions.

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to participate in an assessment day. This is usually attended by 80-100 people. Airlines select roughly 15-20 people, of course, depending on their needs.

Assessment Day Process

Once you have received an official email from the airline’s recruitment team, you will have all the necessary assessment day information. If it is determined that the assessment day begins at 9:00, believe that the start will be exactly at 9:00. Aviation is well known for on-time performance and late arrivals are not accepted. I recommend arriving at the assessment day at least 30 minutes before the start.

All candidates will be gathered in a room where a 1-2 representative of the airline will welcome you. They will take a 5-10 minute presentation, including company history, aircraft fleet, and future plans.

Then they will start the tests. The order, the content of the tests, the number of recruiters can vary for each airline.

Reach Test

As a future flight attendant, you must be able to reach the high places in the cabin of an aircraft where emergency devices can be placed. This limit is set to 212 cm. This height will be marked with tape on the wall and each candidate/candidate must reach that limit. Men can keep their shoes, but they cannot rise to their toes. Women without shoes, but they can stand on their toes.

The rules are simple. You can reach the mark = continue. Otherwise, you will be excluded and will not continue in the assessment day.

English Test

English is considered an official language in aviation. Fluency in English is one of the basic requirements for the flight attendant job. The test you undergo consists of grammar and text comprehension. All with multiple choice.

The test will take about 20 minutes. You need to work fast and accurately. The tests are not difficult.

Impromptu Speech

This test will detect your fluency in English and how you respond to a random question. You’ll get one question and you have to answer immediately.

Questions that may occur:

  • Is it good to be young?

  • What makes people smoke?

  • What kind of superpower would you like to have?

  • Are manners important in your workplace?

  • When did you take all responsibility for others mistake?

Recruiters have many questions in stock and constantly change them. In this test, you need to stay calm, do not panic and try to reasonably answer the question. Watch out for your body language and any grimaces in your face. Sometimes people do not realize it, but when they think about how to answer a question, they might turn your eyes or make other facial grimaces. Don’t forget to smile!

The purpose of this test is to find out how you respond to an unexpected question as it happens on board an aircraft. Passengers are asking quite often about anything.

Group Exercise

Candidates are divided into groups of 8 to 10 people. Airline recruiters enjoying this type of test. These are some of the easiest, fastest and most accurate ways to rate a large group of candidates.

Recruiters will be very carefully watching if you have the key skills and assumptions they are looking for.

During this one test, recruiters assessing:

  • communication skills

  • team work ability

  • decision making

  • vocabulary

  • time management

  • presentation

  • work under stress

Recruiters make important decisions based on your behavior and how you can work together in the team.

What to expect?

  • Your group will receive instructions and a description of a specific issue

  • Then you will get a list of things that could help solve the problem

  • As a team, you have to agree on which things to use

  • The whole team should agree to select things through discussion

  • You will have 15 or 20 minutes to complete the task

  • At the end you may be asked to present your decision (as a team)

Try to really enjoy this test. Be relaxed and do not try to think about the outcome of the problem. It really does not matter. Be polite and smile. If the others are speaking, let them finish. Never interrupt others. Count on the fact that you will have strong personalities in the team who do not like to let other people talk. Try to find the right moment to introduce your idea to the team.

Keep in mind that you are assessed separately, so show your personality in the best light.

Final Interview

The last part of the assessment day is the final interview. Only you and 2 recruiters will be in the room. One of them will interview you and the other will write down all your answers and do not interfere with the interview. Recruiters try to ease the atmosphere, so you do not have to be super nervous, but do not underestimate this last, but very important, step towards achieving your dream.

Expect competency and behavioral questions. You must provide detailed examples in which you will again prove that you have the right skills and qualities to become flight attendant of this airline.

When you answer, give specific examples of when you have done something that includes the required skills for the cabin crew.

Use the STAR technique:

S – situation – describe the specific situation

T – task – describe your task

– action – what action did you take to solve the problem?

– result/outcome – what was the result of your action? What did you learn from that?

Change each answer in storytelling. The recruiter must be able to make a specific picture of your story.

Do not be bothered if the recruiter interrupts you and ask you a question. It’s not meant to get you out of the way, rather guide you on the right path. Carefully listen to the question and think again about the key qualities of the flight attendant that you have not mentioned yet.

Preparation is really important and will have a decisive influence on whether you get the work of your dreams or not.

Remember 5P: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance

The final interview may take 15 minutes for some candidates, or up to 45 minutes for others.

There is a great interest in this job around the world. Emirates says on its official website that it receives 15,000 applications per month! These numbers should not scare you or make you nervous. It should get you motivated.

You need to remember this and give your preparation really the maximum.
